Clare Open 2019 Tournament

This year Clare Handball will be running a Clare Open 2019 tournament. The aim of this tournament is to have Clare Handball’s top adult players competing against each other over the course of one weekend. Running the tournament will also offer handball fans the opportunity to watch top quality games of handball in Clare.

The tournament will see 12 players split into four groups of 3 players. These groups will be played off in a round robin format with the top two players from each group progressing to a quarter final. The group stages of the tournament will take place on Saturday October 26th in Newmarket on Fergus and Clooney with play starting at 10:45am.

The quarter finals, semi-finals and final will take place on Sunday October 27th in Newmarket on Fergus with play starting at 10:45am.

This promises to be a very exciting event for players and spectators alike, with the tournament set to feature players such as Fergal Coughlan Jnr (All Ireland Junior Singles Winner 2019), Mark Rodgers (All Ireland Minor Doubles Winner 2018) and Intermediate players Niall Bolton and Cathal Hannon.

Munster 40 x 20 Inter Club Championships

Newmarket, Kilkishen, Toonagh and Clooney in Inter Club Action

This year Clare Handball will have four representatives in the Munster 40 x 20 Inter Club Championships. The Inter Club Championship is a team event, with teams compromising four players.

Matches are broken down into three ties; tie 1 – singles, tie 2 – doubles and tie 3 – singles. Each tie has 2 games to 15 points in each. The total aggregate score from all games will decide the winner.

In the Junior B category, Newmarket on Fergus will face Conna (Cork) on Saturday October 26th in Liscarroll, Co.Cork. On the same night Kilkishen will travel to Galbally to take on Liscarroll (Cork) and Toonagh will travel the short distance to Tuamgraney to play Bohermore (Limerick) on Saturday October 26th.

In the Junior category Clooney will play either Boherbue (Cork) or Friary Abbeyside (Waterford) in Cashel, Co. Tipperary on Wednesday October 30th.

Clare Handball Juvenile Leagues and Blitzes

U18 League Begins

Clare Handball is currently rolling out a number of Juvenile Leagues and Blitzes in an effort to develop the game of handball within the county. Clare Handball will be running a number of juvenile leagues and blitzes, aimed at players ranging from Under 11 up to Under 18, during the months of October, November and December.

These leagues and blitzes will be run independently of any county championships. The leagues and blitzes are aimed at encouraging participation and playing the sport for fun. The U18 League will commence this Sunday October 27th in various venues across county Clare.

U14/15 League Round 1 Results

Tulla hosted Round 1 of the Clare Handball U14/15 League on Sunday October 20th. There was great excitement in the alley in Tulla as the action here officially begins the 40 x 20 season for players in this age category. There were a number of closely fought games with some exemplary skills on show.

The games were based around the Féile Handball rules with each club team made up of two doubles pairings. The games are timed to 15 minutes or first to score 21 points. All teams played four games over the course of the day gaining a point for every game won.

Clooney and Tuamgraney 1 find themselves sharing top spot after Round 1, on 3 points each, after three wins and one defeat. Next is Newmarket on 2 points, after they took two wins and two defeats. Tulla and Tuamgraney 2 lie equal on 1 point after one win and three defeats.

U12/13 A League Round 1 Results

The U12/13 A League is being run to the same format as the U14/15 League, with all games following Féile Handball rules. Action commenced with Round 1 in Tulla on Saturday October 19th. There were teams in action from Toonagh, Tulla, Tuamgraney, Clooney and Newmarket.

Tuamgraney and Clooney find themselves sharing top spot, on 3 points each, after three wins and one defeat. Next is Tulla on 2 points, after they took two wins and two defeats. Toonagh and Newmarket are neck and neck after Round 1 on 1 point after one win and three defeats.

U12/13 Blitzes

Clooney and Toonagh hosted U12/13 Blitzes on Saturday October 19th. These blitzes are designed to encourage development of skills and the enjoyment of playing handball. These games follow the Cumann na mBunscol Handball rules with each club team made up of two pairs of doubles.

Games are timed to 12 minutes or first to score 21 points with scores being counted when both serving and receiving. Teams from Clooney, Toonagh, Newmarket and Tuamgraney all took part.

Clare Handball League Division 1

Wins for Clooney and Kilkishen B in Round 3

Kilkishen was the place to be for Round 3 as the local battle of Kilishen A (Christy Philpott Jnr, Brendan Hannon, Mark Crehan, Henry McGrath) v Kilkishen B (John Cooney, Conor Cooney, Kevin O’Callaghan, Barry McMahon) taking centre stage. All friendships were cast aside as both teams played at full tilt to gain a win.

It was the Kilkishen B team who were to win out on an overall score of 70-65.

Clooney Quin (Fergal Coughlan Jnr, John Cawley, Shane Hayes, Pat Nolan) returned to winning ways as they travelled to Tuamgraney (Conor Downes, Fionn Slattery, Patrick Crotty, Tiarnan Slattery) and took victory on an overall score of 77-64.

Next week’s tie to look forward to from Round 4 will be, Newmarket on Fergus v Kilkishen B.

Clare Handball League Division 2

Tuamgraney Keep on Rolling

Tuamgraney continued their impressive form in the Clare Handball League Division 2, with their fourth win. Tuamgraney (Gearoid Sheehy, Cathal McKenna, Shane Walsh, Tommy Minogue) were tested at numerous times during their Round 4 match as they travelled to Toonagh (Kevin Hassett, Shane Griffin, Alan Cummins, Brian Reilly).

The resilience which sees Tuamgraney undefeated so far came to the fore as they claimed victory by the narrowest of margins, 67-66.

Kilkishen A (Niall Crehan, Mark Donovan, Greg Shanahan, Jacob Loughnane) claimed victory at home against Clooney Quin A (Pa Clune, Darren O’Neill, Conor Clune, Ryan O’Neill) on an overall score of 72-60. Newmarket on Fergus conceded a walkover to Clarecastle.

Tie of Round 5 will be, Newmarket on Fergus v Toonagh.

Clare Handball League Division 3

Toonagh A and Kilkishen Sit Top

Kilkishen (Alan O’Dea, Keith Crehan, Tim Custy, Fergal Kennedy) hosted Toonagh B (Declan Vaughan, Pat Lynch, Barry Farrell, Brian Griffin) in Round 2 and they won again with an impressive victory on a score line of 83-54.

Toonagh A (Michael Callinan, Brian Reilly, Noel Barry, Philip Lucas) also made it two wins from two when they defeated Newmarket on Fergus on an overall score of 84-40.

Tuamgraney (Keith Hogan, Oisín Molloy, Jason McCarthy, William Fitzgerald) defeated Clooney Quin (Cian Keogh, Kevin Keogh, Rory Corbett, Brian Clune) with a very strong performance on a score of 67-48.

Next week’s match to look forward to, in Round 3, is the local battle of Toonagh B v Toonagh A.
