Garcia Hails Seve Influence After Claiming Maiden Major

Sergio Garcia is now safe in the knowledge he is no longer one of the best players never to win a major title.

Last night’s final round of the Masters have been described as one of the most dramatic in recent years, with the final pair still tied for the lead as they played the 18th.

Garcia eventually overcame Justin Rose in the first playoff hole to win his first major trophy after 74 attempts.

It had looked like the tournament would go to Rose when he held a two shot lead on the 13th hole with his rival taking a dropped shot from the trees.

The last Spaniard to win the Masters was Jose Maria Olazabal, and Garcia revealed his fellow countryman had inspired him to win the green jacket.

Garcia’s win has propelled him up four places to 7th in the latest golf world rankings, one ahead of Justin Rose.

Despite missing the tournament Dustin Johnson still holds a comfortable lead over Rory McIlroy in the number one spot.
