It was survival in the end and Clare just about managed that in Cusack Park as Colm Collins’ charges held on for a one-point win in the Munster Senior Football Championship.

When Jamie Malone kicked a Clare point four minutes into the second half, the Banner were on course for a routine win as they lead 0-9 to 0-2.

But they wouldn’t score again as six unanswered Waterford scores through Dessie Hutchinson, Conor Murray, Tadhg O hUallachain and JJ Hutchinson reduced arrears to the minimum while Tommy Prendergast came close to a Deise goal.

It was all so different in the first half as Eoin Cleary delivered a master class with six scores as Clare led 0-8 to 0-2 at the break.

Waterford were defensive as expected but two frees from the St. Joseph’s Miltown/Malbay man were followed by two from play before Shane Ahearne opened Waterford’s account on 19 minutes.

But with Darragh Bohannon, Cian O’Dea, Cormac Murray, Gavin Cooney and Gary Brennan working hard, they allowed Eoin Cleary add another brace with Jamie Malone and Dean Ryan also on target.

It was set up as Clare went seven clear but they would go 35 minutes without scoring. And while they got over the line, they’ve left themselves with much to ponder ahead of facing Kerry in Cusack Park in three weeks.
