GAA Congress Votes In Favour Of Super 8 Structure For All Ireland SFC

Delegates at the 2017 GAA Congress have voted in favour of a restructured All-Ireland Football Championship.

The “Super 8” motion passed with 76% voting in favour of the move.

From next year the quarter-final stage will be replaced with two groups of four in a round robin format with the top two qualifying for the semi-finals.

Both player organisations, the GPA and the CPA, were against the proposal.

A motion was also passed to move the All Ireland Finals from September to August, while extra time will be played in all championship games except provincial and All Ireland Finals.

These changes will come into effect from 2018-2020 on a three year experimental basis

Meanwhile, Clare’s Robert Frost has failed in his bid to be elected President of the GAA

The East Clare man lost out to Dublin’s John Horan, who will take over the role in 2018.
