Fitzgerald Says Cork Win Great For Clare Fans

Clare manager Davy Fitzgerald says he always believed his side would win out over Cork in yesterday’s Allianz Hurling League relegation playoff, despite the tight nature of the game.

The Banner secured their Division 1A status for 2014 with a dramatic win over Cork at the Gaelic Grounds yesterday.

Trailing by two points entering stoppage time of the second half, Clare were facing relegation but for scores fromTony Kelly and a last gasp free from Colin Ryan, on of his ten scores on the day.

The Banner then played with the advantage of the wind in the first part of extra time, establishing a two point lead at the turn, and fought off a Rebels fightback to win on a final scoreline of 0-31 to 2-23.

Fitzgerald says the win was great for Clare hurling, and for the Clare hurling public.

Meanwhile, former Clare star Jamiesie O’Connor says his county deserved the win.

The Doora-Barefield clubman says Davy Fitzgerald’s men made difficult work of it at times.

Elsewhere in local gaeilc games news, Ennistymon beat Cratloe in the final of Feile Peil na nOg at Cusack Park on a final scoreline of 2-11 to 0-3.
