Clare’s Senior Footballers opened their National League campaign with defeat to Westmeath.

The Banner had to travel to Mullingar to take on the newly promoted side and failed to recover after falling behind in the first half.

Clare had taken an early lead thaks to a Gary Cooney goal – but went almost 30 minutes without registering a score, with a David Tubridy free on either end.
