Clare’s Senior Footballers opened their National League campaign with defeat to Westmeath.

The Banner had to travel to Mullingar to take on the newly promoted side and failed to recover after falling behind in the first half.

Clare had taken an early lead thaks to a Gary Cooney goal – but went almost 30 minutes without registering a score, with a David Tubridy free on either end.

They leveled the score board two minutes into injury time – but a late Westmeath point stole the win.

Manager Colm Collins says their first half performance let them down:

Meanwhile, the U20 footballers took defeat to Offaly in the O’Connor Cup final.

A goal was the difference as the Faithful County retained their title with a 4-7 to 3-7 win over Michael Neylon’s side.
