Clare hurlers will be returning to Croke Park for the first time since their 2013 All-Ireland title win.

It’s after the Banner beat Davy Fitzgerald’s Wexford in the Championship Quarter Final in Cork’s Pairc ui Chaoimh this afternoon.

Both sides were slow to get scores on the board until Tony Kelly and Peter Duggan led the side to a string of scores, capitalising on a poor Wexford puck-out strategy and using their extra defender to effect to race into the lead.

At half time, Clare had a seven point lead on a 0-16 to 0-9 scoreline.

Wexford came charging into the second half and reduced the gap to four points in the middle of the half, while Conor McDonald cut through the Clare defence to register a goal for the Model county.

Wexford could have captured the lead, though except for the superb save by Cathal Malone in the 54th minute and Donal Tuohy’s block and David McInerney’s rejection of the rebound in the 59th minute to deny Wexford a hat-trick.

Clare recovered their form towards the end and raced back to a seven point lead by the full time whistle.

Full time score was Clare 0-27 to Wexford’s 1-17.

Clare move on to face Galway in the Semi-Finals in Croke Park on Saturday, July 28th.
