RSS Syndication

What is RSS?

RSS (Rich Site Summary) is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. Many news-related sites, weblogs and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS Feed to whoever wants it.

RSS solves a problem for people who regularly use the web. It allows you to easily stay informed by retrieving the latest content from the sites you are interested in. You save time by not needing to visit each site individually. You ensure your privacy, by not needing to join each site's email newsletter.

What do I need to use RSS?

To use RSS it is necessary to have access to a News Reader. There are many different types, but the main choice is whether to use a web-based one (such as or Google Reader, Yahoo, Bloglines or Newsgator) or to download a standalone application (which runs on your PC even if you don't have a browser open).

FeedDemon - visit website and download (for windows)
NewsFire - visit website and download (for Mac OS X)
RSSOwl - visit website and download

there are many more.....

Once you have your Feed Reader, it is a matter of finding sites that syndicate content and adding their RSS feed to the list of feeds your Feed Reader checks. You can sign up, for free, to Clare.FM feeds. Your reader will tell you how to add the feed; most readers have a simple, one- or two-step process.

Problems with feed updating.

  • if you are having any issues with the feed automatically updating, this may be due to the applications settings.
  • for e.g. in FeedDemon, if feed is not automatically updating, right click the folder "subscriptions" in the left panel and choose the option "folder properties"
  • Uncheck the option "synchronize this folder with newsgator"
  • also, if you wish to increase the "update frequeny", this can be done at the bottom of the same window
  • click ok and refresh your feeds. (F5). Feeds should be automatically updated.
  • Apart for this, your firewall settings may be blocking the application from updating. Please look at your firewall settings if this is the case.
