Should Schools Close Early for Christmas?

The Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) is calling for serious consideration to be given to extending the Christmas break in school so that students and teachers have more time to restrict their movements before meeting elderly or vulnerable relatives if restrictions allow.

All schools are currently due to close on Tuesday 22nd December, however the union are calling for the closure date to be brought forward to Friday 18th December – a full week before Christmas Day.

The TUI feel that such a move would be a welcome boost in morale, however the idea has so far been shot down by Education Minister Norma Foley – but with increased pressure on the Minister, could this change?
