New Book Sheds Light On Famine Years In Scarriff

The Great Famine affected Ireland, especially those in Clare.Thousands died and thousands more emigrated or were transported.Gerald in great detail at the impact of the famine in East Clare and South Galway and the areas served by the Scariff Workhouse Union, between the end of the 1830s and the start of the 1850s. The workhouse, which opened in 1841, served an area of 170 square miles. The Workhouse Union was one of four in Clare and the Scariff.
