Those who are coeliac have, until now, faced a lengthy diagnosis process – for some it can take up to 10 years from the time they first get symptoms – and currently around three in four with the condition go undiagnosed. But now thanks to a new alert system by the Coeliac Society of Ireland, GPs will be notified to check patients who present with particular symptoms, for coeliac disease, and for those who test positive, to check their families too. The initiative is expected to be rolled out later this year or early next year.

On Tuesday, Gavin was joined by the CEO of the Coeliac Society, Gill Brennan, and by Maeve Howard, from Kilrush, who is a member of the West Clare Coeliac Support Society.
