Will Leaving Cert Predictive Grading Backfire Here After Scotland’s Mishap?

The Leaving Cert students of 2020 haven’t had an easy year and perhaps are nervously looking to our neighbours in Scotland, where First Minister Nicola Sturgeon had to issue an apology after around 125,000 exam results – assessed by teachers – were downgraded, from what she said was too much focus on the ‘overall system’ rather than the students.

It has led to concerns here that predicted grades for the Leaving Cert may adversely affect those particularly from lower socio-economic backgrounds.
