Cromwellian Cannonball Discovered In Clare

On May 12th, Nathan Maxwell was helping to put up a fence at his home in Ballycar, Newmarket on Fergus, when he swung a pick-axe, and struck what turned out to be a cannonball in the ground.

It’s been donated to the Clare Museum, who – with the help of historian Martin Breen – discovered that it was linked with a former castle in Ballycar, and that it dates back to the 1650s and the era of Oliver Cromwell.
