We woke up this morning to the news that legendary concertina player Chris Droney had passed away, at the age of 95.
The Bellharbour native will be best known in Clare as one of the most enduring and beloved figures in traditional music circles.
The Droney family is renowned in music circles, with son Francis and daughter Ann and many of his grandchildren continuing the family tradition.
In 2012, Chris Droney was named as Clare Person of the Year. In 2014 he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement honour at the TG4 Gradam Ceoil awards. In 2018, he was bestowed with the annual MORGlor award.
On Thursday’s Morning Focus, Gavin Grace spoke to Joan Hanrahan from the West Wind on Clare FM about Chris’ legacy. We also played an excerpt from an interview and performance that was recorded just before his 94th birthday.
May He Rest In Peace.
