Wintry showers have led to a number of accidents on roads throughout Clare today.

The latest incident, a two-car collision on the M18, occurred at the Shannon junction after 2:30 p.m.

The Northbound section of the motorway is now due to be closed as a result, and Gardaí are avoiding motorists to avoid the route if possible.

The incident is being blamed on heavy hail showers, and these wintry conditions appear to be causing issues elsewhere.

There’s another accident on the southbound portion of the M18 at Kiltiernan in Co. Galway – the road remains open there.

Earlier, emergency services were called to incidents on the M18 at Newmarket-on-Fergus, as well as on the Miltown Malbay-Inagh and O’Briensbridge-Killaloe routes, and in Ballynacally.

Drivers are urged to proceed with due caution.
