A blanket of snow has covered Clare today as Storm Darcy has been making its way across the country.

It’s not quite the ‘Beast of the East’, but it’s resulting in accumulations of up to 5cm in some parts.

Two weather alerts remain in place for Clare until 8am tomorrow morning – one for snow and ice and the other for wind.

The combination of the two has been leading to what Met Eireann described as blizzard-like conditions in some parts, including poor visibility and hazardous road conditions, so the advice is that if you have an essential journey, you should stay off the roads if possible.

Head of Forecasting at Met Éireann, Evelyn Cusack says there will be further wintry conditions up until Saturday.

Clare County Council has activated its winter service plan today, with snow ploughs and gritters dispatched throughout the county.

Their efforts will be focused on the county’s busiest routes.

With significant rainfall expected as temperatures increase slightly over the weekend, Senior Engineer John Leahy says motorists should drive carefully on potentially slushy conditions.
