Water Charges Row Rumbles On

The row over water charges looks set to intensify – with Fianna Fáil threatening to block the election of a new Fine Gael Taoiseach over the issue.

According to the Sunday Independent – an email was sent to TD’s and Senators yesterday warning that the party will not facilitate such an election unless the ‘confidence and supply’ deal that’s propping up the minority Government is honoured.

The Oireachtas Committee on Water proposes scraping charges, allows for refunds and ends mandatory metering – but Fine Gael says the findings are a breach of EU law.

The paper has also revealed that all 675 workers at Irish Water each received – on average – a bonus payment of almost five thousand euro last month – while more than 22 thousand has been spent on providing specialist fitness lessons for staff.
