Warnings Clare Water Issues May Be Put Off Due To North East Outage

There’s warnings that Clare’s water issues could be put on the long finger in the aftermath of the ongoing issues in and around Drogheda.

Tens of thousands of people there have been left without water for after a pipe ruptured.

Irish Water says limited water is now available in Meath.

Works to repair a burst main in the North East got underway this morning and the utility says main urban centres in east and south east Meath will have some services during daylight hours today.

But a warning has been issued that the water crisis poses a significant risk to public health.

Specialist Dr Peter Finnegan says the situation is hugely concerning.

It’s been six days since the problem first rerupted and Cabinet colleagues are defending the way that the Minster responsible has handled the situation.

Eoghan Murphy is briefing colleagues on the water failures at this week’s cabinet meeting.

Last night the minister was challenged by locals over the failure to protect the water supply for Drogheda and nearby areas but Independent Alliance minister Finian McGrath says it’s is not the minister’s fault.

Meanwhile, a north Clare Civil Engineer claims that while a similar incident is unlikely to happen here in Clare, many areas remain at risk of water-related issues.

Michael Duffy of Kilfenora is also fearful that the much-needed investment in waste water infrastructure here could now be put on the long finger, as the attention is focused on avoiding a repeat in Drogheda and other similar areas.
