Votes Cast In FG Leadership Race

All votes have now been cast in the race for the next leader of Fine Gael.

Counting gets underway at 2:00, and a result will be announced at teatime.

But despite even last minute attempts to get people to switch, it looks like Leo Varadkar’s substantial lead will not be overturned.

After just over a two week campaign, we’ll know in a few hours who the next leader of Fine Gael and Taoiseach elect will be.

There was a 100% turnout in the votes of the Parliamentary Party – some last minute attempts were made to get people to switch to Simon Coveney from Leo Varadkar – one of those reportedly targeted was Clare TD Pat Breen.

First to be counted will be the votes of just over 11,000 of the 21,000 members who decided to vote, then the councillors and then those crucial Parliamentary Party votes.

The campaign got somewhat nasty over the past two weeks with both candidates having jibes off each other. Minister Paschal Donohoe says that had to be expected.

Once the result is announced this evening the new leader will begin the process of preparing to lead the government and should be installed as Taoiseach when the Dáil meets on Tuesday week.

Clare Fine Gael members had their say in this race last night.

There was a 58% turnout as votes were cast in Ennis.

The rest of the country is watching on as they decide who will be the next Taoiseach-elect.
