Varadkar Concerned Over British Government Ties To Northern Parties

The Taoiseach in waiting has raised concern about the British Government being too close to any one party in the North.

Leo Varadkar’s comments come as talks resume to re-establish a power-sharing Executive, but the DUP are also talking to the British Tory party about a confidence and supply arrangement at Westminster.

Today sees talks to restore power-sharing resume in Belfast.

But at the same time one of the parties – the DUP – is in other talks about propping up Theresa May’s government in Westminster.

Former Northern Ireland Secretary Lord Hain is concerned, along with the Taoiseach in waiting – Leo Varadkar, who says as co-guarantors of the GFA, neither Government can be too close to any party.

There’s one possible advantage to the current situation – the DUP favour a softer Brexit – and will push that with the Tories – Arts Minister Heather Humphreys says that needs to be considered.

Progress on the Stormont talks could be slow today as Arlene Foster is due to meet the British Prime Minister in London tomorrow.
