The Coast Guard, Lough Derg RNLI, National Ambulance service, Gardai and Shannon based Rescue 115 helicopter all responded to the call, and a ‘major’ search and rescue operation was launched.

The two kayakers were located by Rescue 115 who then directed the RNLI’s Jean Spier lifeboat crew to their coordinates.

Both casualties had fallen from their kayaks but were holding onto their boats and were taken from the water by the crew of the lifeboat.

They were then taken to Garrykennedy harbour where paramedics assessed them. One was taken to hospital for further observation.
