There was traffic chaos in Ennistymon this afternoon after a truck hit a wall at Blake’s Corner.

The truck, which is carrying rocks to Lahinch as part of coastal protection works, blocked the road from there to the tourist hotspot, leading to lengthy tailbacks in the area for over 3 hours.

Shortly before 11 o’clock this morning a truck carry a load of rocks, which was travelling between Lahinch and Ennistymon struck a wall a Blake’s Corner, blocking the route.

Emergency services were alerted and steps were taken to remove the truck, while Gardaí directed traffic.

The blockage, which resulted in lengthy tailbacks, was cleared shortly before half past two.

It’s not the first time that such an incident has happened at the notorious traffic blackspot – in August, traffic was held up for several hours after a tour bus hit a wall there.

Long term works aimed at alleviating traffic congestion will see a new bridge constructed over the River Inagh, but the council has said that it will be late 2021 before they’re completed.

There have been calls for traffic calming measures in the area in the meantime, but so far, no such measures have been put in place.

Joe McInerney from the Let’s Get Ennistymon Group was there this lunchtime and told Clare FM’s James Mulhall what was happening.
