Taoiseach Tells Party He’ll Deal With Leadership After St. Patrick’s Day

The Taoiseach has told his TDs, Senators and MEP’s he’ll deal with the issue of his leadership after St. Patrick’s Day.

As expected Enda Kenny hasn’t named any date for his departure.

But he appears to have fought off any immediate no confidence motion, with the rebel TDs who want him gone saying nothing.

It had been billed as some form of a showdown meeting, but was more of a damp squib with the leadership issue concluding nearly as quick as it started.

Enda Kenny made a relatively short speech stating that he wanted to go to the White House and would deal with the issue of his leadership shortly after that.

The Taoiseach added that he would deal with it effectively and conclusively, but gave no further details.

He was given a round of applause after the speech and when he finished there was no further debate of the issue with the small rump of TDs who want him ousted soon, saying nothing.

There’s an expectation now that Mr Kenny will trigger a leadership election in early April with the new leader going before the Dáil to be elected Taoiseach by the end of that month.
