Supreme Court To Rule On Surrogacy Case

The Supreme Court will rule today on who is legally the mother of twins born to a surrogate.

Last year, a High Court judge ruled the genetic parents are entitled to be registered as the parents on the twins’ birth certs.

But that decision was appealed by the State, which argued the woman who gives birth is legally the mother – and that it's open to the genetic mother to adopt.

The twins in question were born to a surrogate because the genetic mother was unable to carry the pregnancy.
