Six people lost their lives on Clare’s roads last year.
New Garda figures show it’s the same amount as in 2018, and that this came on a year in which the total number of deaths of driver was up 45% nationally.
A total of 148 people lost their lives last year – pedestrian deaths declined by a third, while passenger deaths were down 20%.
Also today, separate figures show Clare had one of the highest rates of drink-driving in 2019.
From January to September of last year, 161 people were caught driving under the influence of alcohol, the fifth highest rate of any Garda Division in Ireland when population is taken into account.
There were also a further 8 cases of drug driving in the county in the same time frame, according to figures published in today’s Irish Independent.
