There was shock in Kilkee after the latest census figures showed the West Clare tourist hotspot is one of the most disadvantaged communities in the county, with an unemployment rate of 26%.

This has prompted Kilkee Chamber to launch a worldwide appeal for help to riase the necessary funds to develop facilities available to the local community.

A range of state and local funding opportunities, including the LEADER programme, Sports Capital Funding and the Town and Village Renewal Scheme have been identified as part of efforts to address issues.

Local businessman and Co-Founder of Loop Head Tourism, Cillian Murphy says the community have raised a quarter of the required funds, but more help is needed:

Figures show that over the past ten years, the local population has dropped by almost a third.

John Williams of Kilkee Tourism hopes this new initiative will encourage more people to live there.
