Shannon Controller Helps Avert Air Disaster

An air accident report has revealed how a quick thinking Air Traffic controller at Shannon helped prevent a plane crash in Co. Kerry last year. 

A private jet leaving Kerry Airport for Canada narrowly avoided colliding with a hill near the Dingle peninsula in June 2015.

Shortly after taking off, the controllor spotted the aircraft was flying too low and ordered the pilot to a higher altitude. 

The Air Accident Investigation report found that the flight crew had misinterpeted instructions given to them on the ground in Kerry and were less than minute from disaster when the Shannon controller intervened.
