Retailers Urged Not To Hike Beef Prices As Farmers Struggle

The Clare-based General Secretary of the ICSA is warning retailers that farmers need a fair price for their beef while they grapple with a fodder crisis.

The government has introduced a €4.25m fodder import scheme to help offset the impact of a disastrous year, while farmers have been selling off animals in their droves that they can’t afford to feed.

While grass growth is reported to be strong, with many managing to get a late cut of silage, the tough winter followed by the summer drought leaves most in a precarious situation.
