Rescue efforts continue after devastating Nepal earthquake

Rescue efforts in Nepal are intensifying after nearly 2-thousand people were killed in the worst earthquake the area has seen in more than 80 years.

A powerful aftershock has also been felt in Nepal, India and Bangladesh, and more avalanches were reported near Everest where 17 people are now feared dead.

Many countries and charities have offered aid to deal with the disaster.

However, rescuing those who are still trapped is proving difficult.

Some 50 Irish people are believed to be affected by the devastating earthquake in Nepal.

The Foreign Affairs Minister says his department are working closely with the UN and NGO on how Ireland can best assist the nation. 

Minister Charlie Flanagan says they've already made contact with many of the Irish people in the area, however communication lines have been affected.
