Protest Could Be Held Over Closure of Latoon Creek Bridge

A protest may be held by locals in Clarecastle over the closure of a key route into the village.

The route will be closed at Latoon Creek Bridge for almost six months, to facilitate urgent repair works.

But many in the local community have expressed concern over the impact in the run up to the busy Christmas period as Clare FM’s Fiona McGarry reports:

Latoon Creek Bridge, which is located on the former N18 near Clarecastle, is due to close from Monday next, after an the structure was found to be compromised and in urgent need of repair.

But the timing of the closure has led to concern among many locals and businesses who fear it will devastate the local economy over the busy Christmas period.

Clare County Council has previously acknowledged the difficulties it will pose for businesses and the local community, saying a full closure is unavoidable due to the nature of the works.

Clarecastle Fine Gael Councillor Paul Murphy feels there’s little other option but to carry out the repairs.

But business people and locals in Clarecastle aren’t convinced.

Days out from the closure, they want the Council to re-consider its timing .

Pj Keogh says that while they aren’t trying to halt progress, but has suggested that they may demonstrate against the works next week.
