Pressure Mounting On Health Minister As CervicalCheck Scandal Deepens

The CervicalCheck scandal will dominate proceedings when the Dáil resumes this afternoon.

Simon Harris is coming under pressure to release a memo he received about the issues just before Vicky Phelan took her court case, which kicked off the entire saga.

Meanwhile, a Limerick TD is insisting that a redress scheme be set up, as Clare FM’s Fiona McGarry reports:

TDs giving their reaction on their way into Leinster House this lunchtime about the ongoing CervicalCheck scandal.

The crisis is deepening, with revelations that 162 out of 208 women whose files were audited were not told they were part of a HSE lookback.

It began with terminally ill Limerick woman Vicky Phelan’s court case finishing up last week and now Health Minister Simon Harris is under pressure to release a memo he was given about the issue before Vicky’s case.

And Minister Harris isn’t the only one in the firing line, with Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald targeting the head of the HSE Tony O’Brien.

Focus is now turning to the women affected by the screening controversy and what will happen next.

Speaking on Clare FM’s Morning Focus, Limerick Labour TD Jan O’Sullivan has called for a redress scheme to be put in place.

She has welcomed the payout given to Vicky Phelan but says the other women affected need compensation too.

Deputy O’Sullivan also doesn’t expect the planned inquiry into the scandal to be a quick process.
