The President Mary McAleese has paid tribute to former President and Clare man Patrick Hillery for his forsight in setting up the Gaisce Awards 25 years ago.
The President’s Youth Award Scheme was established by the Spanish Point Native during the recession of 1985 to encourage the talents and skills of people aged 15 to 25 and to set them challenges in Community involvement and personal skill.
President McAleese presented the inaugural Hillery Medal to five people who had given more that 21 years service to Gaisce in the presence of Dr Hillery’s wife Maeve yesterday.
