Pope Appoints Clare Archbishop To High Level Middle East Position

The Pope has appointed an East Clare native Archbishop to a high level position in the Middle East.

62-year-old Archbishop Eugene M. Nugent, who’s originally from Scariff, was ordained a priest in 1983 for the Diocese of Killaloe.

He’s a graduate in Celtic Studies from NUI Maynooth and theology and canon law at the Gregorian University in Rome, while he also studied diplomacy and international relations at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy there.

Archbishop Nugent has spent the last six years in Haiti and will transfer to Kuwait in mid-February, where he will take up his position as Apostolic Nuncio for Kuwait and Qatar.
