West Clare Councillor Hails Harty’s Step Back As “Bittersweet”

A West Clare Councillor has hailed the decision by the Clare’s Independent TD to step down from politics as a “bittersweet” moment for the west of the county.

Dr Michael Harty announced yesterday that he will not be contesting the upcoming General Election, after serving as the county’s only independent Oireachtas member since 2016.

Dr Harty has cited the difficulty in fulfilling a commitment to both the Dáil and to his village of Kilmihil as the main reason for his decision.

Kilrush Independent Councillor Ian Lynch was hoping that his fellow West Clareman would go for a second term and continue to represent that side of the county:

Meanwhile, Dr. Harty has claimed that he refused approaches to run for political parties in the upcoming election, before making his decision
