Boris Johnson has won the largest Conservative majority since the days of Margaret Thatcher, on a night of joy for the Tories, and despair for many opposition parties.

The Lib Dems leader Jo Swinson lost her seat, and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn announced plans to step down after their worst result since 1935.

The result was closely watched in Brussels, where Leo Varadkar and other EU leaders have gathered for their latest summit.

The Taoiseach says he’s relieved, saying the result paves the way for a Brexit deal to be concluded.

The Taoiseach has also played down suggestions that the result makes an early election here all but certain, but many political pundits disagree.

Today, one former Clare Fine Gael TD predicted that we’ll be going to the polls by late February or early March.

Madeline Taylor Quinn doesn’t believe the Government will want to risk a vote of no confidence in the meantime.

And while it’s a case of when, rather than if, with regards to the election, the importance of how and why it is called has been played down.

Former Clare Fianna Fáil TD and Minister, Tony Killeen doesn’t think that will make a difference to ordinary people whether the election is ultimately triggered by Micheál Martin or Leo varadkar.
