The election result means Clare now doesn’t have a formal first citizen.

Cathal Crowe’s election to the Dàil brings an immediate end to his sixteen years as a member of Clare County Council, and a premature end to his term as the county’s Mayor.

Councillors must now elect a new Mayor at a special meeting in the coming weeks, with that person holding onto the role until June, while Ennis Fianna Fàil Councillor Clare Colleran Molloy, the current Deputy Mayor, will likely fulfill Mayoral Duties in the interim.

Fianna Fàil will also have to select a replacement Councillor to takeover from Cathal Crowe on the local authority in the coming weeks.
