Clare’s Senator Calls For Cool Heads In Brexit Discussions

Clare’s Senator is calling for cool heads around the discussion table as both Britain and Ireland harden their stances on Brexit.

The Taoiseach has spoken to the new British Prime Minister by phone, in what was their first contact since Boris Johnson took up office.

During yesterday’s conversation, Leo Varadkar invited Mr Johnson to Dublin for bilateral talks, while the British premier reiterated his stance that they will crash out without a deal if the EU doesn’t compromise on the backstop issue.

Ennistymon Fine Gael Senator, Martin Conway says it’s important now to engage in constructive talks:

Boris Johnson will meet political leaders in Northern Ireland today, in his first visit since becoming British Prime Minister.

He’s expected to say devolution must be restored as soon as possible, after power-sharing collapsed in 2017.

Meanwhile, the Central Bank says there could be temporary food shortages in Ireland if there’s a no-deal Brexit.

Its latest report shows the economy is due to grow by 4 percent next year – more than previously thought.

But it would be just 0.7 per cent if Britain leaves the EU without a deal.

That scenario would also mean 35-thousand less jobs being created here in 2020.
