Most local Garda divisions are set to double in size as part of a massive shake up of An Garda Síochána.

The Irish Examiner reports that the new proposed policing model would see the number of Garda divisions cut from 28 to 19, while the number of Garda regions will be reduced from 6 to 4.

Under the proposals, a new Northern Region will stretch from Mayo to Louth and Donegal to Galway, with a new Eastern Region running from Meath down to Waterford.

While Clare and Tipperary will join Limerick, Cork and Kerry in the new Southern Region.

The restructuring of the force is part of a new model aimed at revamping policing at local and regional level and includes recommendations of the Policing Commission Report.

Concern has previously been expressed over a suggestion that Clare would come under the control of the Galway Division, and Commissioner Drew Harris has committed to addressing the Clare Local Policing Committee to discuss the new model in the coming months.
