Plans To Increase Hospitality VAT For Expensive Hotels ‘Bonkers Idea’

A Lahinch hotelier has labelled suggestions to increase the VAT rate in the hotel sector for those charging over €150 a night as ‘a bonkers idea’.

As things stand, the reduced rate of 9% in the hospitality industry which was introduced as an emergency measure in the recession to increase revenue remains in place.

But there is now talks of reintroducing the 13.5% rate for those exceeding a certain price per night – with a threshold set at around €150.
