The sharp rise in the number of penalty points being issued across the country for the first half of 2011 follows the introduction of more than 600 privately operated speed cameras under the Go Safe Programme.

The number of drivers getting points is expected to far surpass 2010 totals with motorists in several counties, including Clare, Kerry, Longford, Limerick, already well over their figures for last year.

In the figures, obtained from a parliamentary question, the largest increase was in Clare where more than 3,700 drivers were penalised up to the end of June, compared to just over 2,800 in all of 2010.

Other offending counties include Kerry where over 2,700 drivers clocked  up points for the first six months of this year -compared to just over 1,800 in 2010, while Limerick City was was up by almost 500.

Despite the figures – Chief Superintendent John Kerin of the Clare Garda Division yesterday told Clare FM that he was confident that overall – driver behaviour here has improved considerably since the roll-out of the Go Safe Cameras.
