Parteen Residents Fear It Will Be ‘Impossible’ To Mitigate Impact Of LNDR

It’s claimed that it’ll be impossible to mitigate the impact of the Limerick Northern Distributor Road on the village of Parteen.

A masterplan to help protect the South-East Clare village ahead of the construction of the controversial dual carriageway is in the works.

But a residents group there is still concerned.

Despite a long campaign against it, the Limerick Northern Distributor Road has now been given the green light by Councils in both Clare and Limerick.

They say it will open up access to the northern part of Limerick City, and South-East Clare, and lead to a boost in economic activity in that area.

It’s still some way off completion but concerns are acute, with opponents saying the road will pass through flood plains and dissects Parteen village.

One of those who has been vocal against the project is local Fianna Fáil Councillor Cathal Crowe, who teaches in Parteen National School.

His proposal to put a masterplan in place to help offset the impact of the project has been approved by Councillors from the Shannon Municipal District.

Though he still doesn’t want to see it go ahead, he hopes this will help soften the blow.

The intention behind the motion has been welcomed by the Northern Distributor Concerned Residents Group.

However, they feel that it won’t do much in the way of protecting their community.

Ed English is one of the members of that group and says regardless of what plan is put in place, it will still destroy Parteen village.
