The popular 18-year-old died just hours after togging out for the Kilmaley U21s in their final against Inagh/Kilnamona.

Today, players from both clubs lined the short route from the GAA grounds to the church as a mark of respect.

At the funeral mass, Oisín’s father John Cahill shared a touching tribute to his only son:

After sharing some memories of his son, John also pleaded to the crowds – in particular to younger people – to “please, please drive safely”.

Among the gifts offered this afternoon were a hurley and sliotar, to mark Oisin’s love of sport; a pair of overalls because he loved to work and a prayer book he received from his grandmother that he kept under his pillow every night.

Oisín was the only son of John and Angela, who also have four daughters – his sister Eilís also spoke to the congregation of how he stopped in her doorway every evening to say goodnight, and how night-time will now never be the same.

After today’s funeral mass, Oisin Cahill was laid to rest in Kilmaley cemetery.

The funeral of his cousin Darragh Killeen will be held on Saturday.
