The number of County Councillors in Clare won’t change ahead of the next local election.

That’s despite the planned review of electoral boundaries that will change where some people here cast their votes.

For the second successive local election, there will be significant changes in the boundaries for Clare’s electoral areas after the next vote in May 2019.

The Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government has confirmed the already well-reported details of the Committee that is to make recommendations.

Junior Minister John Paul Phelan has annouced the make up the committees which will review the situation, and has instructed the group that will look at Clare that there be no more than 7 Councillors in any local area.

However, with 8 seats in both the Ennis and West Clare areas at present, that means there will be change here.

Typically, electoral areas will have between 5 and 7 members, although some will have 3 or 4.

The Committee is to assume no change in the membership of each Council, meaning there will almost certainly be 28 members here once more.

Their final report is due within six months.
