New EU Travel Approach To Be Agreed; Could Impact Shannon

A new EU-wide common approach to travel during COVID-19 is set to be agreed by member states today.

While Ireland is expected to sign-up for the so-called traffic light system, concern has been raised by airlines over the pace at which the new system will be implemented, and if this is regarded as being too slow, then it could have a major impact in Shannon.

Ryanair has already threatened to close its base there, while Aer Lingus has indicated that it would return the Shannon-Heathrow service sooner than planned if restrictions for UK-bound travelers were eased.

The route is seen as vital for local business travelers in particular, and Aer Lingus CEO Sean Doyle says they are in a position to bring it back to Shannon, if certain conditions are met.
