There has been mixed reaction to the news that the first step has been taken to address long-term traffic issues at Blake’s Corner in Ennistymon.

Clare County Council is to lodge a planning application this side of Christmas to get the ball rolling on works including a new crossing of the Inagh River.

Blake’s Corner is one of the country’s most infamous traffic blackspots, and the Council hopes it’s plans to develop a new bridge over the River Inagh, and other associated works, will resolve these long-running issues.

The Council’s looking to lead the project itself, and is making a Part 8 planning application to get the go-ahead.

The overall route runs from a point 170 metres southeast of Blakes Corner on the Inagh to Ennistymon Road to one 180 metres west of the corner on the Ennistymon to Lahinch Road.

Ennistymon Fine Gael Senator Martin Conway is confident it’s an important step.

However, the business owners and residents who will be affected by the works are not pleased.

Fergal O’Connor’s family ran a post office for three generations just beside the notorious bridge.

Though that has now closed down, Fergal’s brother Francis still lives in the family home and it’s one of three premises that look set to be purchased, and knocked down.

Fergal is unhappy with the level of consultation with the local authority.
