Minister Of State For Heritage Says Keeping Clare Sites Open ‘A Huge Challenge’

The Minister of State for Heritage has described keeping heritage sites open in Clare beyond the end of this month as ‘a huge challenge’.

Green Party Minister Malcolm Noonan has visited Bunratty Castle & Folk Park today, where he’s met with representatives of Shannon Group and SIPTU workers at the site.

Bunratty Castle & Folk Park, along with King John’s Castle in Limerick are both due to close by the end of this month, while Craggaunowen and Knappogue and Dungauire castles have remained closed since the coronavirus outbreak in March.

The Government is facing calls to prevent the closures, with Shannon Group, which manages a number of Clare’s heritage sites, seeking up to €4 million to keep sites open.

Minister of State for Heritage Malcolm Noonan has been telling Clare FM’s Josh Prenderville that this will be a challenge for the local tourism industry in 2020 and beyond.
