Minister Ross Officially Opens New Motorway Extension

The Transport Minister has cut the ribbon on the new M18/M17 motorway extension, linking Gort with Tuam.

Minister Shane Ross has officially opened the new 550 million euro project that spans over 54 kilometres and represents one of the biggest infrastructural investments for the West of Ireland.

It will open to traffic from later this afternoon as Clare FM’s James Mulhall reports:

It’s more a case of the M17/M18 from today, as the new Gort-Tuam motorway opens this afternoon.

And there are no stone walls – instead, this is a 550 million euro project that spans over 54 kilometres and represents one of the biggest infrastructural investments for the West of Ireland.

Transport Minister Shane Ross officially cut the ribbon.

The project came in ahead of schedule – something Transport Infrastructure Ireland took pride in at this morning’s opening ceremony.

TII CEO Michael Nolan says it’ll benefit town’s and villages right along the new route too.

Today saw a lot of focus on the economic benefits of putting full access along the West in place – among those welcoming the new motorway was Minister for Rural and Community Development Michael Ring.

Gardai are at work opening the motorway on a staggered basis beginning immediately after the crowds cleared and full access will be in place by 4 o’clock. Galway divisional traffic inspector Conor Madden outlines their plan.

Meanwhile, as the dust settles, calls are being made for a collective effort to capitalise on the opportunities presented by the motorway.

Ennis, Shannon, Limerick and Galway Chambers are coming together to work out a plan to market the region as Clare FM’s Fiona McGarry reports:
