New figures show women in the MidWest are still battling a gender divide when it comes to securing work.

Women here are 40% more likely to be living in jobless households than men, according to new CSO figures which also show their total number is increasing over the past two years.

That’s despite a fall in overall joblessness.

These new CSO figures come following an examination of the 182,700 households in Clare, Limerick and Tipperary, and the people living in them.

In particular, the figures focus on employment, and show that more people are finding work.

10% of all people aged 18 to 59 are living in jobless households, down from almost 17% in the same period six years ago.

However, there are more women living in jobless households than men.

In fact, the number of women in jobless homes has risen in each of the past two years, even though it’s fallen generally and for men.

All in all, women are over 43% more likely to be in a jobless home here, meaning they have been staying out of the workforce by choice, or because they’re finding it difficult to gain employment.
