Mid West nurses defend threatened strike action over patient safety

The Accident and Emergency Department at the hospital in Dooradoyle is responsible for all emergency cases in Limerick, Nenagh and Clare at night time since the closure of 24 hour A and E at the beginning of this month

INO Industrial Officer in the Mid West Mary Fogerty there who says that nurses in the accident and emergency department at the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Limerick cannot cope with the emergency demands of the entire region without more resources to run the hospital.

An additional 15 beds were allocated to help deal with the increase in emergency cases from Clare and Tipperary since the closure of Ennis A and E and Nenagh A and E at night time but this has made little difference

Mary Fogerty says that the staff in the emergency department are concerned at the delays in the department which could be compromising patient safety

On Monday night last between 8pm and 9-30, there were 100 people in the A and E department either waiting to be seen or waiting for a bed which is unacceptable according to the INO…

The unions are looking for extra staff, extra beds and more resources in order to deal with the demands of the region.

A recent HIQA report called for a review of clinical and non clinical management, leadership and governance arrangements at the hospital.

Jim McGrath is the SIPTU Nursing Representative for the Mid West Region.

He says that an increasing amount of people from Clare and Tipperary are presenting to Limerick A and E which could place the future sustainability of Ennis General and Nenagh General Hospitals in doubt
