The Mayor of Shannon has cancelled his annual Christmas Ball in light of the economic situation.
The event, which is held to raise money for local charities will be replaced by a range of fundraising activities throughout the new year.
As part of his Christmas message, Fine Gael’s Sean McLoughlin said that it would not be right to hold the annual ball when unemployment rates continue to rise and the economy is still in recession.
